McCauley Hearing Scheduled May 24 in Morgan County Magistrate Court

A preliminary hearing will be held at the Morgan County Magistrate Court in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia on May 24 at 2 pm in connection with the criminal murder complaint filed against Andy McCauley, Jr.

Magistrate K.M Ambrose has been assigned to the case.

McCauley was charged on May 16 with the murder of 15-year old Riley Crossman.

McCauley is being held without bond at the Eastern Regional Jail in Martinsburg.

At a press conference on May 16, Morgan County Sheriff K.C. Bohrer said that Crossman’s body was scheduled to be transported to the West Virginia Medical Examiner for an autopsy last Friday.

The Medical Examiner said they only release information about autopsies to the family and to law enforcement. There has been no word from law enforcement on the results of the autopsy.

According to the criminal murder complaint filed against McCauley, Crossman’s body was found “in the area of Tuscarora Pike just east of Swinging Bridge Road over a steep drop off which was later determined (personal clothing, dental spacers) to be Riley Crossman.”

“The body also had what appeared to be dry wall mud on her right shoulder and right foot. The location of possible drywall mud on the body is consistent with the alert by a cadaver dog to the rear of (McCauley’s) truck where drywall mud was also located.”

At the the Thursday press conference, Bohrer was asked by reporters how Crossman was killed.

“I can’t get into that at this time until we have a thorough autopsy,” Bohrer said.

McCauley is no stranger to the criminal justice system, with multiple charges brought against him in both Maryland and West Virginia.

In 2013 in Berkeley County, Andy J. McCauley Jr. was charged with delivering cocaine and conspiracy to deliver cocaine charges.

He pled no contest to the one count of conspiracy to deliver cocaine and was fined $1,000. The judge in the case ruled that McCauley “by virtue of his plea of no contest, now stands convicted of a felony.”

According to the felony murder complaint filed last week against McCauley by the Morgan County Sheriff’s office, Crossman was last seen at her residence on May 7, 2019 at 7 pm “by her grandmother.”

McCauley was the boyfriend of Riley Crossman’s mother Chantal Oakley.

“The mother (Chantal) advised when she got home that day at approximately 2300 hours (11 pm), she saw Riley’s bedroom light on (door closed) and Andy McCauley was downstairs in the reclining chair asleep and her other sons were also downstairs asleep in the living room area.”

“Chantal advised that when she woke up that morning at approximately 717 hours (7:17 am), she checked Riley’s bedroom and did not see her there and assumed she walked to school.”

The Sheriff’s office said that an eye witness “observed a green in color Dodge 2500 work truck with a ladder rack, backed into the residence” at approximately 10 a.m.

Morgan County Sheriff deputies interviewed McCauley on May 10 regarding his whereabouts on May 8 at 10 am.

“During this interview, multiple inconsistencies were noted,” Corporal F.H. Edwards wrote.

McCauley told the police officers that he “does not have a license and typically does not drive.” (Many of McCauley’s interactions with law enforcement over the years had to do with driving without a valid license.)

Among the inconsistencies noted in the criminal complaint — “Andy would not admit to driving a vehicle (Green Dodge truck) and later admitted to driving it” and “Andy stated he does not shoot and he sniffs drugs, where Andy stated he goes to the house to shoot his drugs.”

According to a Facebook post by Lance Crossman, Riley’s father, viewing services for Riley Crossman will be held on May 25 from 3 to 5 pm and again from 7 to 9 pm at the Brown Funeral Home located at 287 Arden Nollville Rd, Inwood, West Virginia.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 26th at 3 pm.

“We want these services to be an expression of love and remembrance for Riley,” Lance Crossman wrote. “Please refrain from discussing any trial details. Please do not ask the family for details surrounding her death. We would ask that only Riley’s life is on your minds at the service. Thank you all so much for loving our little girl.”
