Dollar General to Appear Again Before Morgan County, West Virginia Planning Commission

Facing growing community opposition to a proposed Dollar General store, the Morgan County Planning Commission will once again consider Dollar General’s proposal to put a store at the corner of Oakland Road and US 522.

The Commission has scheduled a meeting for Tuesday February 17, 2015 at 7 pm at the Morgan County Courthouse in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia to reconsider Dollar General’s proposal.

In a public notice, the Planning Commission has invited the public to “participate in the meeting.”

“We urge all citizens opposed to the Dollar General store to attend and participate in Tuesday’s meeting,” said Rita Donadieu, a spokesperson for the group organizing to oppose the Dollar General store.

“This is a rural residential area,” Donadieu said. “There already exist three dollar stores —  a Dollar General in Paw Paw, and a Dollar General and a Family Dollar in Berkeley Springs. We don’t need a fourth.”

Donadieu said that the community opposed to the Dollar General is planning on printing yard signs with the message — Keep it Rural, No Dollar General.

Last month, the Planning Commission postponed action on Dollar General’s proposal after finding that Dollar General did not give proper notice to the community about the upcoming meeting.

Two community meetings — the January 19 community meeting at the Union Chapel United Methodist Church, which sits across the street from the Dollar General site, and the January 27 Planning Commission meeting — drew standing room only crowds in opposition to Dollar General’s proposal.
