Swint to Capito: Release Your Taxes

Howard Swint today challenged Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virginia) to release her tax returns for the period of 2008-2011 “to explain what may be illegal income.”

“Congresswoman. Capito will not meet this challenge as it will result in an Office of Congressional Ethics investigation – it’s that simple,” Swint said.

“One of the most glaring issues centers on the irregularities associated with the reporting of mortgage liabilities on the House forms and what is on record at the Rockbridge County Courthouse in Lexington, Virginia,” Swint said.

“Those records for a rental property contradict each other and suggest that preferential loan terms may have been provided by Citigroup.”

Citigroup is a major contributor to Capito’s political campaigns.

“Congresswoman Capito has refused to comply with the disclosure of her terms on other Citigroup mortgages she and her husband refinanced after the Countrywide scandal,” Swint claimed. “Those records, as well as more detailed information on stock trades and related transactions during the financial crisis, would reveal how, in 2008, Congresswoman Capito and her husband managed to realize $50,000 in capital gains in Citigroup stock during a period that the stock lost over 76% of its value.”

Swint says that Capito’s secrecy “flies in the face” of her professed belief – professed in the Charleston Gazette on December 3, 2011 – that “the public has a right to expect complete transparency and full disclosure of financial interests and transactions made by members of Congress.”
