Jared Spielman struck out 17 Frankfort batters on way to 9-0 complete game shut out to lead the Berkeley Springs Indians to the Region II Section I title this morning at Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.
Spielman took a no hitter into the seventh inning, gave up a single and a double, but struck out the side to end the game.
For the first three innings, Spielman locked horns with Frankfort’s Colton Dorsey and it was scoreless at the end of three.
The Indians broke it open in the bottom of the fourth when Brady Spielman stole home on a busted suicide squeeze play.
Kyle Appel then smashed a double to left field to score two.
At the end of four it was 4-0 and with Jared Spielman in control, Berkeley Springs (16-13) was on its way to the sectional championship.
On May 21, Berkeley Springs will face Region I Section 1 champ Petersburg (23-8) at Berkeley Springs.
On March 31, Berkeley Springs took two from Petersburg 8-2 and 7-1.
But after dropping that March double header to the Indians, Petersburg won 14 in a row.
Petersburg eight losses have come against Berkeley Springs (2), East Hardy (2), Washington, Hedgesville, Musselman and Hampshire.
The winner of the Berkeley Springs/Petersburg game will play the winner of the Section III/Section IV game on March 23 for a ticket to the state championship June 1 and 2 at Charleston.
Berkeley Springs has not been to the state championship since 1985 and has not won it since 1984.
