{"id":6191,"date":"2025-06-25T09:35:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-25T13:35:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=6191"},"modified":"2025-06-25T09:35:40","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T13:35:40","slug":"berkeley-springs-bypass-to-open-today-by-noon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=6191","title":{"rendered":"Berkeley Springs Bypass to Open Today by Noon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The southern section of the four lane US 522 bypass around Berkeley Springs will open today by noon.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/bs-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"814\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/bs-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6192\" style=\"width:342px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/bs-3.jpg 814w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/bs-3-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/bs-3-768x477.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s according to officials at the West Virginia Division of Highways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>State officials said the highway was built because of heavy truck traffic on US 522 through the community of Berkeley Springs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About thirty percent of the approximately 13,400 vehicles that use US 522 every day are trucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe opening of the southern corridor of the Berkeley Springs Bypass marks a significant milestone in improving safety and mobility for residents and travelers in the region,\u201d said Transportation Secretary Stephen T. Rumbaugh. \u201cThis new segment provides a more efficient route for traffic.&nbsp; When completed, the bypass will provide for a more efficient route for commercial trucks, helping to ease longstanding congestion in the town of Berkeley Springs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October 2020, Trumbull Corporation was awarded a contract for $59.8 million to build the lower leg of a bypass around Berkeley Springs, beginning south of Winchester Grade Road and extending north of Martinsburg Road.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project included construction of several bridges, three new at-grade intersections, and a new interchange with existing WV 9 and Martinsburg Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are proud to deliver this critical infrastructure project as part of our ongoing commitment to modernizing West Virginia\u2019s roadways, promoting safety, and supporting our communities,\u201d Rumbaugh said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In December 2022, A.L.L. Construction Inc. was awarded a contract for $35 million to complete the northern leg of the bypass to connect the southern section back onto US 522 north of Berkeley Springs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That project also includes construction of two bridges and a connector road to War Memorial Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe northern corridor of the Berkeley Springs Bypass remains under active development,\u201d Rumbaugh said. \u201cDesign work is advancing, and right-of-way acquisition is ongoing to prepare for future construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe remain committed to moving this project forward and securing the resources necessary to complete the full bypass for the people of Morgan County,\u201d Rumbaugh said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The northern section of the bypass is expected to open to traffic in 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening of the southern end of the bypass was delayed by almost a year because of unintended guardrail design and construction issues on the bridge over Route 9.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The southern section of the four lane US 522 bypass around Berkeley Springs will open today by noon.
