{"id":6015,"date":"2024-09-12T12:11:28","date_gmt":"2024-09-12T16:11:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=6015"},"modified":"2024-09-12T15:50:46","modified_gmt":"2024-09-12T19:50:46","slug":"hugel-bed-planting-at-berkeley-springs-depot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=6015","title":{"rendered":"Hugel Bed Planting at Berkeley Springs West Virginia Depot"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you passionate about nature and eager to make a positive environmental impact?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/hugel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/hugel.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6016\" width=\"346\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/hugel.jpg 603w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/hugel-230x300.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s an opportunity to roll up your sleeves and volunteer for a rewarding project that blends ecology and community spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You get to plant native perennial plants behind the Berkeley Springs Depot at the nature based stormwater control area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s happening Saturdays September 14 and September 21 from 9:30 am to 11:30 am and Thursdays September 12 and September 19 from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plants you will be planting are native perennial, landscape-plugs that will be planted on hugel beds that were created from local topsoil and compost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s a hugel bed you might ask?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Don\u2019t let the abbreviation and acronym posers pull the hugel over your eyes.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hugel is short for h\u00fcgelkultur bed \u2013&nbsp; pronounced \u201choo-gul-kulture.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a raised garden bed made from organic materials and wood that&#8217;s built from the bottom up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word h\u00fcgelkultur is German for hill culture or mound culture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are transforming the former rail yard into a thriving habitat by planting native perennial plants,\u201d said Rebecca MacLeod, one of the organizers of the hugel planting. \u201cThis nature-based stormwater control area is designed to naturally remediate soil and improve local ecosystems.
