{"id":524,"date":"2013-07-21T08:10:09","date_gmt":"2013-07-21T12:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=524"},"modified":"2013-07-21T08:10:09","modified_gmt":"2013-07-21T12:10:09","slug":"capito-to-citizens-drop-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=524","title":{"rendered":"Capito to Citizens: Drop Dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">On June 26, a group of citizens here in West Virginia <a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=493\">delivered a petition to their Congresswoman<\/a> &#8212; Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virginia) &#8212; calling on Capito to hold a public meeting in the district during the August Congressional recess to discuss raising the minimum wage from the current $7.25 an hour to $10.50 an hour.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The petition was signed by 400 citizens of Capito\u2019s Second Congressional District.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe the undersigned call on Congresswoman Capito to meet with us at a town meeting, during the August recess, at a convenient public space to discuss the legislative necessity of a $10.50 federal minimum wage for the working poor of our country who produce, serve and care for us each day,\u201d the petition read.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe look forward to an expeditious acceptance with time and place as soon as possible so as to prepare for a thorough dialogue with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One week goes by, no answer.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Two weeks go by, no answer.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Three weeks go by, no answer.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Finally, on July 18 a letter arrives from Capito.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Capito ignores the request for a meeting.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI appreciate the opportunity to learn your views on this issue,\u201d Capito writes.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The dictionary definition of the word \u201cappreciate\u201d is \u201cto be fully aware or sensitive to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A politician like Capito uses the word \u201cappreciate\u201d to mean exactly the opposite.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Capito uses the word to mean &#8212; go take a hike, get off my back, or drop dead.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As in &#8212; Capito to Citizens: Drop Dead.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Four hundred of you signed a petition calling for a public meeting.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But I am not even going to address the issue.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m not going to say I\u2019m going to meet with you.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m not going to say I\u2019m not going to meet with you.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m just going to ignore you.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After \u201cappreciating\u201d her citizens, Capito then moves on to lay out her voting record on raising the minimum wage.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI have supported previous efforts to increase the minimum wage to benefit West Virginia workers,\u201d she writes. \u201cI voted for bipartisan legislation that passed the House to increase the minimum wage in 2007. The 2007 legislation garnered 348 bipartisan votes in the House and later became law. This 2007 effort increased the minimum wage to $7.25 per hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cAs Congress considers future legislation that would increase the minimum wage, you can be sure that I will keep your views in mind,\u201d she writes. \u201cAgain, thank you for contacting me with your views on this issue.
