{"id":4678,"date":"2020-08-19T06:02:26","date_gmt":"2020-08-19T10:02:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=4678"},"modified":"2020-08-19T10:28:29","modified_gmt":"2020-08-19T14:28:29","slug":"donald-kinnie-takes-on-craig-blair-for-west-virginia-senate-seat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=4678","title":{"rendered":"Donald Kinnie Takes on Craig Blair for West Virginia Senate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>West Virginia Senator Craig Blair (R-15) survived a political scare earlier this year in the June Republican primary, receiving 8,054 votes (53 percent) to Kenneth Mattson\u2019s 7,221 (47 percent).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/kinnie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/kinnie.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4686\" width=\"289\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/kinnie.jpg 714w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/kinnie-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/kinnie-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 289px) 100vw, 289px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Mary and Donald Kinnie<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Mattson getting 47 percent of the vote against the incumbent and chairman of the Senate Finance Committee was one indication that Blair was politically vulnerable in a volatile election year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EPT_RobandDave\/status\/1295727881017012224\">Yesterday on the WRNR program Eastern Panhandle Talk with Rob Mario and David Welch<\/a>, Welch handicapped the race between Blair and Mountain Party candidate Donald Kinnie. There is no Democrat in the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Welch downplayed Blair\u2019s vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a very low turnout in the primary and I would suspect that Craig Blair would be much stronger in the general,\u201d Welch said.\t<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his last election in 2016, Blair easily defeated Democrat Brad Noll 30,475 (70 percent) to 13,629 (30 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 15th Senate District includes parts of Berkeley and Mineral counties and all of Morgan and Hampshire counties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t see anything to suggest that Craig Blair would be in trouble in the general election,\u201d Welch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t tell that to Kinnie, who works at WRNR in Martinsburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kinnie thinks that Blair is in serious trouble with the state\u2019s teachers. And it was teachers who propelled several upsets statewide in the recent Republican primary election &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsls.com\/news\/politics\/2020\/06\/10\/teacher-beats-west-virginia-senate-president-after-protests\/\">including the defeat of Senate President Mitch Carmichael by elementary school teacher Amy Nichole Grady<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=4534\">and the defeat of Delegate Daryl Cowles in the 58th by the teachers&#8217; union backed candidacy of George Miller.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=4660\">Blair suggested at a recent candidate forum<\/a> that if the teachers don\u2019t show up to work because of Covid-19 health concerns, that they all be fired or furloughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kinnie\u2019s mother was a special ed teacher and as a child, Kinnie walked the picket lines with his mother during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvgazettemail.com\/news\/education\/photos-west-virginia-s-first-teacher-s-strike-in-lasted\/article_e9b71c49-265a-540d-b3b1-5bb333960909.html\">11 day West Virginia teachers\u2019 strike in 1990.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kinnie is originally from Augusta, West Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI grew up in a little farmhouse down there,\u201d Kinnie told <em>Morgan County USA. <\/em>\u201cI started out with the old fashioned West Virginia farm boy upbringing. And my father was and still is a lumberjack. He has pulpwood and timber business. And my mother was a schoolteacher. She taught special ed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I started school we moved to Inwood, West Virginia. So I came up through Inwood Primary, Value View Elementary and Musselman Middle and High Schools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith my mother being a teacher, I was with her on strike back in 1990,\u201d Kinnie said. \u201cI was actually on the picket line with the teachers, holding signs. So, I\u2019m very sympathetic to the teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCraig Blair has been outspoken on teacher issues and that is something that sets us apart,\u201d Kinnie said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kinnie has been a lifelong practitioner of martial arts and he now teaches kung fu classes at Elite Martial Arts and MMA in Martinsburg, West Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMartial arts is something I\u2019ve always been passionate about,\u201d Kinnie said. \u201cAnd that was my original thought process in running.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSomething I teach in martial arts is what are called the five virtues \u2013 honor, loyalty, perseverance, benevolence and integrity.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd those are for the most part missing in today\u2019s politics. And they are virtues that I want to bring into this campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kinnie says that the polarization between Republicans and Democrats is corrosive to the democratic process and his preference would be that we move to a political system where there are no parties and that everyone runs as an independent on their values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not that one party is good and one party is bad,\u201d Kinnie said. \u201cYou just go through each issue one by one and do the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kinnie\u2019s wife Mary Kinnie is a Mountain Party candidate for House of Delegates in the 60th district.
