{"id":4609,"date":"2020-07-30T10:42:15","date_gmt":"2020-07-30T14:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=4609"},"modified":"2020-07-30T12:22:48","modified_gmt":"2020-07-30T16:22:48","slug":"mystery-seeds-from-china-arrive-in-morgan-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=4609","title":{"rendered":"Mystery Seeds from China Arrive in Morgan County"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>About a month ago, Carol Caflisch, who lives in southern Morgan County, West Virginia, received a mystery packet of seeds from China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/carol.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/carol-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4610\" width=\"318\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/carol-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/carol-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/carol-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Carol Caflisch<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had no idea what they were and there wasn\u2019t much online about them at the time,\u201d Caflisch said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey looked like large spinach seeds,\u201d Caflisch said. \u201cI wasn\u2019t going to plant them. I just put the seeds aside, took a picture of the package and threw the package away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since receiving her first unsolicited package of seeds from China, she has read news articles about the U.S. Department of Agriculture investigating these packages \u2013 which have been delivered to people in all 50 states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/seeds-min.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/seeds-min-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4618\" width=\"248\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/seeds-min-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/seeds-min-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 248px) 100vw, 248px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Seed packet from China <br>sent to Carol Caflisch<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUSDA is aware that people across the country have received suspicious, unsolicited packages of seed that appear to be coming from China,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/aphis\/newsroom\/stakeholder-info\/sa_by_date\/sa-2020\/sa-07\/seeds-china\">the USDA said in a press release.<\/a> \u201cUSDA\u2019s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is working closely with the Department of Homeland Security\u2019s Customs and Border Protection, other federal agencies, and State departments of agriculture to investigate the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\tYesterday, Caflisch got her second package of seeds from China in the mail.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese seeds look like large caraway seeds,\u201d Caflisch said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> She said she reported the seeds to the USDA.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>USDA investigators asked Caflisch whether she had ordered seeds online. She had &#8212; from legitimate retailers via Amazon earlier in the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I guess they are trying to figure out how people in China figured out I was interested in seeds and are now sending me random seeds unsolicited,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/media\/radio\/daily-newsline\/2020-07-29\/actuality-unsolicited-seeds-are-several-plant-species\">Osama El-Lissy of the USDA\u2019s plant protection program says<\/a> that \u201cwe have identified fourteen different species of seeds, including mustard, cabbage, morning glory, and some herb seeds like mint, sage, rosemary and lavender.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd then there are other seeds like hibiscus and roses. This is just a subset we have collected so far.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The USDA says that anyone who receives an unsolicited package of seeds to immediately contact their state plant regulatory official or APHIS State plant health director.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlease hold onto the seeds and packaging, including the mailing label, until someone from your State department of agriculture or APHIS contacts you with further instructions. Do not plant seeds from unknown origins.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt this time, we don\u2019t have any evidence indicating this is something other than a brushing scam where people receive unsolicited items from a seller who then posts false customer reviews to boost sales.
