{"id":3985,"date":"2019-03-06T13:29:29","date_gmt":"2019-03-06T18:29:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=3985"},"modified":"2019-03-09T11:09:58","modified_gmt":"2019-03-09T16:09:58","slug":"capstone-spirits-distillery-coming-to-morgan-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=3985","title":{"rendered":"Capstone Spirits Distillery Coming to Morgan County"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Driving south on 522 some eleven miles south of Berkeley Springs, on your left you will come across a gazebo that has sprung up on the front parcel at the Morgan County Business Park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z5UcDCvA0Nk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That gazebo once enclosed will become the tasting room of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CapstoneSpirits\/\">Capstone Spirits Distillery<\/a>, owned and operated by Kathryn Krenn, her husband John Hrubec and her son Nick Hrubec.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The family has owned property near Paw Paw for more than 25 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why a distillery?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen my husband and I were talking about what we might do when we retired, we talked about owning a small business,\u201d Krenn told This Week in Morgan County. \u201cI was on my way back from a business trip reading the airline magazine and they were talking about micro distilleries being the next big thing after micro breweries. I looked at that and said \u2013 hey, we could do this. We have these skills. I took it home and pitched it to my husband John and my son Nick. And they were on board. And here we are.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gazebo is up \u2013 and that will be enclosed to become the tasting center and retail outlet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then behind that gazebo will be the distillery \u2013 which in the short run will produce clear liquors like vodka and gin and in the longer run the brown liquors like rye whiskeys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf the weather holds this spring, we hope to be open by the end of the year,\u201d Krenn said.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnder federal law, you have to have your buildings in before you can apply for a license.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will most of your sales be wholesale or retail?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA bit of both. It will be family friendly. There will be a big garden area out front. People can come in and taste the liquors and then go out to the garden area.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not going to be a bar?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo. You can only do a bit of a tasting. Then you have to take the bottle home and drink it somewhere else.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Krenn is a retired electrical engineer, but her husband and son are all handy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you building the distillery yourself?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome of it and some will be contracted out,\u201d she said. \u201cOn the gazebo, we will fill in the walls and finish the inside.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behind the gazebo area is where the liquors will be distilled. There will be four sections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is a building that is our mashing area \u2013 that\u2019s where we cook the grains,\u201d Krenn said. \u201cWe will use rice, wheat and rye to get started. Then there is the fermenting area. That\u2019s where you put yeast in to eat the sugars and make the alcohol. That then goes to the distillery part where we refine the alcohols. And then it will go to the storage area for aging and to be sold. The vodka is ready to go as soon as it is distilled. The gins may need a bit of time. A rum sometimes for three or six months. But a whiskey or rye could take years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is your favorite drink?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love a good gin and tonic,\u201d Krenn said. \u201cAnd I like the different kinds of gins.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Driving south on 522 some eleven miles south of Berkeley Springs, on your left you will come across a gazebo that has sprung up on the front parcel at the Morgan County Business Park.
