{"id":3981,"date":"2019-03-04T14:04:27","date_gmt":"2019-03-04T19:04:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=3981"},"modified":"2019-03-04T14:14:34","modified_gmt":"2019-03-04T19:14:34","slug":"west-virginia-supreme-court-to-hear-two-cases-in-berkeley-springs-april-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=3981","title":{"rendered":"West Virginia Supreme Court to Hear Two Cases in Berkeley Springs April 9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The West Virginia Supreme Court will hear two cases on April 9 beginning at 10 am at the Morgan County Courthouse in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3980\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/court.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3980\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3980\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/court-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/court-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/court-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/court-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/court.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3980\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Morgan County Courthouse<br \/>Berkeley Springs, West Virginia<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hearing the cases in Berkeley Springs is part of the Court\u2019s Legal Advancement for West Virginia Students (LAWS) program that allows all students in West Virginia to participate.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1999, the Supreme Court has held an argument docket at a county courthouse about once a year and invited students from that area to attend.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first time that argument has been held under the program in Berkeley Springs.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers and volunteer attorneys help prepare students to understand court documents and appellate court procedure.<\/p>\n<p>On April 9, students watch arguments and then can question attorneys who argued the cases after the Justices have left the room.<\/p>\n<p>All Supreme Court arguments are webcast live.<\/p>\n<p>For the LAWS docket, the Court will record the webcast and leave it on the Court\u2019s YouTube channel to allow students anywhere to view it during their regularly scheduled classes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Court is excited about reaching more students every year,\u201d said Chief Justice Beth Walker. \u201cWe believe that by giving young people a real-life experience in how the judicial system works they will grow to have respect for the importance of the rule of law in our society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walker said that the Court is proud to have educated more than 5,600 students in 33 counties through LAWS. Both high school and college students have attended.<\/p>\n<p>The newly expanded program may also be appropriate for eighth-grade students studying West Virginia government.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.courtswv.gov\/supreme-court\/calendar\/2019\/dockets\/apr-9-19ad.html\">The first case that will be heard on April 9<\/a> at the Morgan County Courthouse is a sexual assault case against a babysitter who was convicted and sentenced to 35 years in prison. The defendant is seeking to overturn the conviction.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.courtswv.gov\/supreme-court\/calendar\/2019\/dockets\/apr-9-19ad.html\">The second case is a medical malpractice case<\/a> involving an infant who died during an attempt to deliver her from her mother\u2019s womb during an obstetrical emergency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The West Virginia Supreme Court will hear two cases on April 9 beginning at 10 am at the Morgan County Courthouse in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.
