{"id":3715,"date":"2018-09-18T21:36:37","date_gmt":"2018-09-19T01:36:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=3715"},"modified":"2018-09-19T14:00:45","modified_gmt":"2018-09-19T18:00:45","slug":"fleur-de-lis-cheese-shop-and-the-berkeley-springs-renaissance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=3715","title":{"rendered":"Fleur De Lis Cheese Shop and the Berkeley Springs Renaissance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Danish multinational Rockwool\u2019s planned heavy industrial facility is wreaking havoc in Jefferson County, in Morgan County, Berkeley Springs is moving in the other direction &#8212; back to its bread and butter &#8212; tourism and recreation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out the recent developments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Berkeley Springs Brew Pub has opened at Coolfont.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coolfont is about to reopen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xvDejQVWS48\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cacapon State Park is about to undergo a major renovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The old train station is about to be renovated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Country Inn is well on its way back to being the institution that anchors the town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rumor has it that the site of the old Black Dog might become a coffee shop again soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The diner across from the old Earth Dog is being renovated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambrae House has been transformed into a deli &#8212; selling wine, beer, cheese, meats and sandwiches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Naked Olive is expanding into the former smoke shop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another brew pub is planned for the old antique mall in town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morgan on Main has opened where the old Inspirations restaurant used to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rumor has it that a beer garden might open at the vacant lot on Fairfax Street.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Troubadour is booming under new management.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And remarkably, a new cheese shop across from Berkeley Springs State Park is thriving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who would have thought?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regina Aamacha, that\u2019s who.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s the owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/fleurdelischeeseshop.com\/\">Fleur De Lis Cheese Shop.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And she\u2019s busy non stop. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She sells out of her cheese from around the world &#8212; every week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How could it be that a cheese shop is thriving in Berkeley Springs?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople just love cheese,\u201d Aamacha told <em>This Week in Morgan County with Russell Mokhiber.<\/em> \u201cCheese is like wine or chocolate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What kind of cheese do you sell?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI sell mostly imported, but I have several domestic cheeses as well,\u201d Aamacha said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aamacha also sells meats in her shop, including a venison pate with chestnuts and black currants from Italy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople come into my shop and buy cheese for two people,\u201d she says. &#8220;That\u2019s about a quarter pound of cheese.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also sells wines from around the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m very particular about wines too,\u201d she said. \u201cI learned about wine from cheese. I studied cheese first and then went to wine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aamacha also sells bread. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have several sources for bread. They are usually crusty on the outside. I also have a whole grain bread with pumpkin seeds and cranberries that is made by a local baker in Berkeley Springs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aamacha doesn\u2019t get her cheeses delivered to Berkeley Springs. She has to travel every week to pick them up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI drive to Delaware,\u201d she says. \u201cI meet a truck that comes down from New York. I also drive to Dulles Airport. And I drive locally to farms to pick up cheese from local producers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe thing that impresses people about the cheese shop is the selection of cheeses. When they come in they see I have cheeses that are hard to get, that are sought after by people who are cheese people or chefs, or people who have been to other countries and been exposed to the great cheeses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aamacha says about 80 percent of her customers are tourists and twenty percent locals. With tourism declining over the winter, what will Aamacha do to supplement her income?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m going to have wine and cheese classes on the weekends,\u201d she says.\u201dI\u2019m also going to do platter design classes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aamacha is also a singer and she\u2019ll be singing at the Berkeley Springs Brew Pub.
