West Virginia Senate President Mitch Carmichael (R-Jackson) said House of Delegates candidate Bibi Hahn (D-Morgan County) doesn\u2019t belong on the November ballot because of what he called \u201cstupid\u201d comments Hahn posted to Facebook about Carmichael, President Donald Trump, capitalism and socialism.<\/span><\/p>\n

Carmichael appeared this morning on WRNR\u2019s Eastern Panhandle Talk with Rob Mario and David Welch<\/em>. (Audio here at 42:40<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n

Carmichael had written an opinion piece in the August 30 Charleston Daily Mail<\/em> titled West Virginia Won\u2019t Be Great Again Through Socialism.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Hahn responded with an August 31 Facebook post<\/a> addressed to Carmichael.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Carmichael \u2013 Trump won because he appealed to the fears of West Virginians \u2013 immigrants taking their jobs, Muslim Sharia invading our culture, the demise of the white man\u2019s majority, the unhinged anger over having an intelligent black man as their President for 8 years,\u201d Hahn wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSadly, this wouldn\u2019t have worked if West Virginians had the prosperity that most states voting against Trump enjoy. He blames everything on immigrants, minorities, anyone with a different belief or skin color. Just like Hitler.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Bibi Hahn<\/p><\/div>\n

\u201cThe blame falls on \u2018leaders\u2019 like you that continue to exploit our workers with your \u2018right to work\u2019 law, the way you allow the fossil fuel industry to pimp our state, the way you fought the teachers on a tiny little pay raise,\u201d Hahn wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eastern Panhandle Talk<\/em> co-host Welch read the Hahn post aloud to Carmichael to get his comment. <\/span><\/p>\n

Carmichael initially thought Hahn was referring to him as a racist and responded with anger.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat is the first time I\u2019ve heard that,\u201d Carmichael said. \u201cThat is a pathetic, ridiculous, stupid comment on her behalf. You walk into my office, the Senate President\u2019s office in the state capitol here, it is a tribute to non discrimination. There is Martin Luther King\u2019s I Have a Dream speech on my wall. There is the Diary of Anne Frank portrait on my wall. There is Rosa Parks on my wall. I have been 100 percent against discrimination.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnybody who would say something like she said in that article does not deserve to be on a ballot. That is just stupid what she said. And I\u2019m getting a little bit angry just even hearing it. I have stood hard 100 percent against any form of discrimination.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

We rang up Carmichael after the show, read him the Hahn comment in full \u2013 emphasizing the fact that Hahn was referring to President Trump blaming everything on \u201canyone with a different skin color.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

We asked Carmichael if he still stood by his statement that Hahn’s post was \u201cstupid\u201d and that Hahn doesn\u2019t deserve to be on the ballot.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s even more stupid than when I heard it first,\u201d Carmichael told Morgan County USA.<\/em> \u201cIt\u2019s ridiculous to say West Virginians don\u2019t have the intellect, that somehow Trump exploited the fact that there was a black man in the White House \u2013 that is beyond ridiculous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen a candidate seeks to divide people along race, sexual orientation — they need to re-evaluate whether they ought to be a candidate,\u201d Carmichael said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Doesn\u2019t President Trump do that?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t get that from him,\u201d Carmichael said. \u201cBut I don\u2019t follow the national level as much as the state level. I don\u2019t think so. He\u2019s trying to lift everyone to a higher level. I was at his national convention. He had people of different sexual persuasions giving keynote addresses. Trump was representing the worker class.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As for socialism, would Carmichael get rid of the socialistic single payer systems for older Americans (Medicare) and for poor Americans (Medicaid)?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Carmichael said. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMedicare and Medicaid serve populations that are in vital need,\u201d Carmichael said. \u201cPrograms that assist the needy are not antithetical to capitalism. They are a moderation of the excesses that can occur in a completely dominated capitalist society. You need to help each other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
