{"id":3358,"date":"2018-04-20T08:18:30","date_gmt":"2018-04-20T12:18:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=3358"},"modified":"2018-04-20T08:18:30","modified_gmt":"2018-04-20T12:18:30","slug":"berkeley-springs-bypass-faces-opposition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=3358","title":{"rendered":"Berkeley Springs Bypass Faces Opposition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the powers that be&#8211; including State Senator Charles Trump (R-Morgan) and House of Delegates Majority Leader Daryl Cowles (R-Morgan) &#8212; are lining up behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/transportation.wv.gov\/highways\/engineering\/comment\/BerkeleySpringsBypass\/Documents\/US522.pdf\">proposed bypass around Berkeley Springs<\/a>, there is significant public opposition.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3359\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3359\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3359\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/bypass-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/bypass-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/bypass-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/bypass-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3359\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eric Miller (left) and Daryl Cowles (center) Look Over 522 Bypass Map<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Front and center in opposition is Morgan County Chamber of Commerce President Jeanne Mozier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mozier argues that a bypass around Berkeley Springs will kill the town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI still oppose the bypass,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=3198\">Mozier said earlier this year.<\/a> \u201cI\u2019ve been opposed for the last twenty some years. And nothing changes my mind. The bypass would be a death knell for the town.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And at last night\u2019s meeting at Berkeley Springs High School, held by the West Virginia Division of Highways, the bypass faced vocal opposition from many of the more than fifty citizens who attended. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some are opposed because of the direct adverse impact it would have on their properties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others &#8212; like Eric and Carol Miller &#8212; are opposed to the bypass because of the direct adverse impact the bypass would have on the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Millers met in Europe while serving in the Army. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eric is a middle school teacher. Carol is an industrial electrician. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Millers moved to Morgan County fifteen years ago, bought a 100 year old farmhouse on Johnson Mill Road about five miles outside of town, where they live amidst their library of thousands of books, many on World War I. (Eric is a historian of the Western Front.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Millers came to Morgan County from the I-95 corridor on the East Coast, in part to get away from East Coast interstate highway culture. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And they don\u2019t like what they see in the Berkeley Springs bypass proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eric says that there are ways to divert truck traffic without building a multi-million bypass that will fundamentally change the community. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCommunities around the country know how to redirect truck traffic without a bypass,\u201d Eric Miller said \u201cSpeed bumps, enhanced enforcement, truck weigh stations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carol Miller said that around each of the interchanges of the bypass will pop-up fast food joints, gas stations and big box stores &#8212; and that will change the nature of the town. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Millers say they are willing to fight to preserve Morgan County.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDo you want to live in Hagerstown?\u201d one opponent asked last night. \u201cOr do you want to live in Berkeley Springs?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While the powers that be&#8211; including State Senator Charles Trump (R-Morgan) and House of Delegates Majority Leader Daryl Cowles (R-Morgan) &#8212; are lining up behind the proposed bypass around Berkeley Springs, there is significant public opposition.
