{"id":3104,"date":"2018-01-04T07:11:24","date_gmt":"2018-01-04T12:11:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=3104"},"modified":"2018-01-04T10:01:58","modified_gmt":"2018-01-04T15:01:58","slug":"mike-folk-to-run-against-john-unger-for-west-virginia-senate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=3104","title":{"rendered":"Mike Folk to Run Against John Unger for West Virginia Senate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commercial airline pilot and West Virginia Delegate Mike Folk (R-63) announced this week that he\u2019s running against West Virginia Senator John Unger (D-16).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3106\" style=\"width: 299px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3106\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3106\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/folk.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"289\" height=\"174\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3106\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mike Folk<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Folk made his announcement on the <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/talkradiowrnr-705556938\/1-2-18-phil-mccoy-and-delegate-mike-folk\">WRNR morning show Eastern Panhandle Talk.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe contrast between John and I is significant,\u201d Folk said. \u201cI don\u2019t mince words. I had no desire to be a career politician. It was move up or move out. If you look at the history of our records, you will see that mine has been consistent and John\u2019s has been too, in some respects. I believe that oftentimes the government is the problem. John believes that government is the solution. His history shows that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3105\" style=\"width: 286px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3105\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3105\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/unger.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"183\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3105\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Unger<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI supported some people who ran for Senate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212; like Patricia Rucker &#8212; and I just feel I could be very effective over there (in the Senate.)\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, Rucker upset Senator Stephen Skinner (D-16), by 53 percent to 47 percent in the same 16th Senatorial District that Folk and Unger will face off in in November. (The 16th includes most of Martinsburg and all of Jefferson County.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does that mean that the 16th Senatorial district is fertile ground for Folk to beat Unger?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere was no bigger contrast between Stephen Skinner and Patricia Rucker,\u201d Folk said. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s much different between John and I. The distinctions are clear. I believe the solutions are the private sector, personal responsibility, fiscal responsibility &#8212; and I have the record to prove that, even against my own party. My opponent had no problem for twenty years increasing spending in the State of West Virginia enormously even though our population has shrunk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDo I ruffle the feathers of (Republican) leadership who four years said one thing and maybe now four years later are doing something different? That frustrates a lot of people in our party.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Folk was asked &#8212; how do you blend into that mix with Senator Charles Trump (R-15), Senator Craig Blair (R-16) and Governor Jim Justice?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLast session was part whack a mole &#8212; trying to knock down the bad tax proposals &#8212; and part tug of war &#8212; we\u2019re not going to increase spending $450 million, which was what the Governor\u2019s budget proposed. We met somewhere in the middle &#8212; passing a $4.225 billion &#8212; slightly more than last year &#8212; about $80 million. If you take out the flood relief, we passed a flat budget. I consider that a win.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you get along with Senators Rucker, Trump and Blair?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI worked with Charlie a whole bunch when I was with the Judiciary Committee,\u201d Folk said. \u201cI have a good relationship with Charlie. Craig &#8212; I think I\u2019ve grown on him a bit, but maybe not. That\u2019s between him and himself whether he agrees. I think he agrees that I\u2019m well researched. I know my facts. There was probably no bigger proponent for Patricia Rucker\u2019s candidacy than me. I saw how hard she worked. And I like people who work hard. Several members of the House who I worked with are now in the Senate &#8212; Mike Azinger (R-3) for one, who is a fiscal conservative also. You can go down the line.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;But more importantly, I can work across the aisle. Senator Mike Woelfel (D-5) &#8212; I have a good relationship with Mike. Senator Richard Ojeda (D-7) &#8212; I don\u2019t necessarily agree with everything, but he\u2019s a passionate person. We work well together, we respect each other. He\u2019s a little bit like me in the sense that we both think the establishments of both parties have sometimes not done the best things for our state and our country. I have gained a lot of respect, especially from the opposing party.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy first two years in the legislature, everybody thought I was hammering them because they were in the majority. No, I was hammering them because they were doing the wrong thing. If the Republicans come in and don\u2019t stand on their principles &#8212; I call a spade a spade.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you seek the counsel or support of any of the Republicans in the Eastern Panhandle before making your decision?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I ran in 2012 for the first time, I sought out the senior member of the legislature to let him know. I was told at that time &#8212; we already have our candidate picked. Please support them. I told him &#8212; I\u2019m not asking your permission, I\u2019m just letting you know. I talked to a few people this time. I have had many people in the Senate \u00a0come to me and say &#8212; please run, please run.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Folk cannot be easily pigeonholed politically. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last session, he bucked the House Republican leadership <a href=\"http:\/\/www.herald-dispatch.com\/news\/wv-house-fast-tracks-medical-marijuana\/article_74f99442-cac3-5f15-9f58-7b35fbc16198.html\">to push through West Virginia\u2019s medical marijuana bill<\/a> and wants to strengthen it in the upcoming session. Folk is also supportive of President Trump\u2019s unpopular tax bill, which he predicts will put more money in the pockets of West Virginians and as a result will add to West Virginia\u2019s sales tax revenues. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On his website, Folk says writes that \u201cI am currently back working as an airline pilot as a 757\/767 pilot \u00a0mainly flying to Europe.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2016\/jul\/18\/michael-folk-united-airlines-pilot-and-gop-lawmake\/\">Folk made national news last year<\/a> when he tweeted that Hillary Clinton should be tried for treason and then \u201chung on the mall in Washington, D.C.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the wake of the adverse publicity to the Folk tweet, United Airlines suspended Folk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis pilot has been removed from flying pending our investigation,\u201d United Airlines said at the time. \u201cWe are appalled by his threatening comments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Commercial airline pilot and West Virginia Delegate Mike Folk (R-63) announced this week that he\u2019s running against West Virginia Senator John Unger (D-16).
