{"id":3062,"date":"2017-10-29T16:51:57","date_gmt":"2017-10-29T20:51:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=3062"},"modified":"2017-10-29T16:54:13","modified_gmt":"2017-10-29T20:54:13","slug":"state-tree-nursery-superintendent-to-visit-berkeley-springs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=3062","title":{"rendered":"State Tree Nursery Superintendent to Visit Berkeley Springs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Believe it or not, West Virginia has a state tree nursery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3061\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/nursery-300x134.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s called the West Virginia Clements State Tree Nursery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the state tree nursery has a superintendent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His name is Jason Huffman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jason Huffman will be visiting Berkeley Springs on November 9 at 11:30 am. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He will be answering questions at a potluck lunch at the Morgan County Senior Life Services Building, 106 Sandmine Road in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The presentation will be of interest to gardeners, naturalists and horticulturists in general. All are invited. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The state-owned tree farm was established in 1961, and encompasses some 126 acres, including seedlings or cover crop and 15 acres of seedbeds. It sits near the Ohio line in West Columbia, West Virginia. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The West Virginia Division of Forestry operates the nursery with four employees and twelve inmates from the Lakin Women\u2019s Correctional Center. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nursery currently grows 22 species of trees. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Superintendent Huffman recently agreed to propagate two additional natives \u2013 the Yellowwood and Carolina Silverbell \u2013 from seeds grown and harvested in Morgan County that will be handed over after the luncheon. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seedling sales of bare root trees, primarily for conservation purposes, have averaged one million annually over the past ten years. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trees are available to order inexpensively from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wvforestry.com\/nursery.cfm?menucall=nurse\">Clements State Tree Farm.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early orders are promoted because some species sell out each year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nursery is experiencing difficulty with its seed deliveries this year and welcomes donations of locally grown tree seeds \u2013 these should be reasonably clean, kept cool, and labeled as to type when brought to the luncheon. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those preferring an onsite Senior Life Services catered lunch instead of the potluck must pre-order \u2013 call (304) 258-3096 before November 3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Questions about the event should be addressed to Dawn White, (304) 258-5422 or Potomac Valley Audubon at (304) 676-3397. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Believe it or not, West Virginia has a state tree nursery.
