{"id":2780,"date":"2017-03-10T10:55:10","date_gmt":"2017-03-10T15:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2780"},"modified":"2017-03-10T12:04:30","modified_gmt":"2017-03-10T17:04:30","slug":"capito-mooney-and-jenkins-flee-mckinley-doesnt-show-manchin-dives-in-and-diverts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2780","title":{"rendered":"Capito Mooney and Jenkins Flee McKinley Doesn\u2019t Show Manchin Dives In and Diverts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was one of those lobbyist affairs buried in the swamp &#8212; in this case, Dirksen Senate Office Building Room G-50 &#8212; at a party held by the West Virginia State Society and sponsored by the likes of FirstEnergy, Merrill Lynch and United Bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2778\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20170308_190337-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"20170308_190337\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20170308_190337-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20170308_190337-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20170308_190337-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a press release from the West Virginia State Society, the entire West Virginia Congressional delegation \u2013 Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito, along with the three members of the House from West Virginia \u2014 David McKinley, Alex Mooney and Evan Jenkins \u2014 \u201cwill offer remarks and spend the evening mingling with West Virginians and friends from around the DC-area.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2777\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20170308_185115-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"20170308_185115\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20170308_185115-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20170308_185115-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20170308_185115-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s right &#8212; friends from the DC area. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not friends from West Virginia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But word got out and more than forty town hall deprived friends from West Virginia made the trip into the swamp to mingle with the swamp dwellers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur elected representatives have refused to hold town hall meetings in West Virginia,\u201d said organizer Tracy Cannon. \u201cSo we are now forced to travel to Washington DC to meet with them. \u201cWe are eager to mingle with our elected members of Congress and discuss with them their votes that threaten our precious waterways, our health, and our livelihoods.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2779\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20170308_190452-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"20170308_190452\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20170308_190452-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20170308_190452-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20170308_190452-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was Wednesday March 8. The room was packed with lobbyists and Congressional staff. And the friends from West Virginia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinley didn\u2019t show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Capito spoke, the West Virginians called for a moment of silence for those without health care in West Virginia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The town hall was on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How did our elected representatives respond?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Capito, Mooney and Jenkins made brief remarks, they took off, despite shouted pleas and boos from those who made it from West Virginia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou said you would mingle,\u201d one woman shouted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only Manchin dove into the crowd and took questions for more than an hour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Manchin proved himself to be a master at diversion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Manchin was confronted by constituents upset that no one in the Congressional delegation has held town hall meetings, he claimed to have held meetings throughout West Virginia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2782\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/button-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"button\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/button-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/button.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as one citizen pointed out, they were private gatherings, not town hall meetings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, one meeting that Manchin might have been referring to was in November 2016 when Manchin attended a private Region 9 development hearing in Berkeley Springs where he touted the benefits of natural gas pipelines and urged local officials to push back against Morgan County residents resisting the Mountaineer Gas pipeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople don\u2019t want any type of inconvenience on their property,\u201d Manchin said at the time. He suggested the state could consider investing in the Mountaineer Gas project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf the state becomes involved, it\u2019s a public project and with eminent domain you can move on it when you need to,\u201d said the senator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <em>Morgan Messenger<\/em> reported that Manchin raised the prospect of individual counties partnering with Mountaineer Gas to move the project ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the DC event, a number of people challenged Manchin on his support for the pipeline projects. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upper Potomac Riverkeeper Brent Walls gave Manchin a \u201cJust Say No to the Pipeline\u201d button.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manchin said he was willing to listen to concerns, but he didn\u2019t budge on his position in favor of fossil fuels and natural gas pipelines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Manchin was challenged on his support for the revocation of the stream restoration rule, he launched into a defense of coal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Chess Yellott, a medical doctor from Shepherdstown, called on Manchin to support a Medicare for all single payer system &#8212; a system that would drive down costs and cover everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manchin indicated support for the concept &#8212; but then asked &#8212; what do you want me to do?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIntroduce a single payer bill in the Senate\u201d one citizen answered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The House single payer bill &#8212; HR 676 &#8212; already has 64 co-sponsors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manchin shrugged his shoulders as if to say &#8212; \u201cyou known I can\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Manchin stood and took questions for more than an hour.
