{"id":2725,"date":"2017-02-02T14:39:10","date_gmt":"2017-02-02T19:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2725"},"modified":"2017-02-02T14:57:07","modified_gmt":"2017-02-02T19:57:07","slug":"mountaineer-cancels-debate-because-opponents-of-pipeline-wouldnt-agree-to-stop-talking-about-solar-and-wind-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2725","title":{"rendered":"Mountaineer Gas Cancels Debate Because Opponents of Pipeline Wouldn\u2019t Agree to Stop Talking about Solar Energy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Area citizens organizing to defeat the proposed TransCanada and Mountaineer natural pipelines were intrigued when they were told that Mountaineer Gas had agreed to a public debate on February 4, 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2726\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/solar-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"solar\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/solar-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/solar-768x547.jpg 768w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/solar.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The citizens were excited by the opportunity to debate Mountaineer Gas and <a href=\"https:\/\/webcache.googleusercontent.com\/search?q=cache:PCkpr6HWhhAJ:https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/921256711338052\/+&amp;cd=1&amp;hl=en&amp;ct=clnk&amp;gl=us\">posted the event on their Facebook page<\/a> &#8212; Eastern Panhandle Protectors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOn February 4, 2017, newly elected WV Delegate Marshall Wilson will moderate a debate between Tom Westfield, Senior Vice President of Mountaineer Gas, and Abigail Benjamin, Counsel for Blue Heron Environmental Network in Berkeley County, West Virginia,\u201d the notice read. \u201cDetails to follow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the only detail to follow was that the event was cancelled. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mountaineer wouldn\u2019t say why. Delegate Wilson said it was a scheduling conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, it was more than a scheduling conflict. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mountaineer Gas didn\u2019t like what was being written about their project in the press. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company especially didn\u2019t like the activists saying that the TransCanada and Mountaineer natural gas pipelines were not needed because solar and wind and alternative energy were knocking on West Virginia\u2019s door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey changed their mind after reading some comments on a public website from local environmentalists,\u201d said one person familiar with the company\u2019s response. \u201cThere will be a private meeting with Mountaineer Gas with eastern panhandle legislators about the pipeline route in the second week of the legislative session. Mountaineer Gas wanted to invite a representative of the citizens\u2019 group to the meeting. But the trade for doing that would be to get a commitment from other citizens along the route to stop making public comments like \u2018we should use solar energy instead of gas.\u2019 They are willing to meet if the environmentalists started being more moderate in their speech about the pipeline.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What language do they oppose? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey should stop talking about the need for solar energy right now because that isn\u2019t helping the conversation,\u201d this person said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But citizens said they won\u2019t stop talking because solar has already eclipsed fossil fuels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSolar energy is an established energy industry providing more jobs than coal, natural gas and oil combined\u201d said Mike McKechnie, president of the Morgan County based Mountain View Solar, the largest solar installation company in West Virginia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/flipboard.com\/@flipboard\/flip.it%2FYvmE.n-solar-employs-more-people-in-us-electri\/f-201d61ec14%2Fforbes.com\">Solar energy has almost exactly twice as many jobs<\/a> (374,000) as coal, natural gas, oil and petroleum combined (187,000). The solar energy industry is growing at a rate of 20 percent to 22 percent year after year. It\u2019s cleaner, more sustainable and it has more jobs. This is where the jobs are. We don\u2019t need any more dirty fossil fuel energy. The country and the world has turned to solar energy.
