{"id":2702,"date":"2017-01-23T18:42:17","date_gmt":"2017-01-23T23:42:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2702"},"modified":"2017-01-23T18:42:17","modified_gmt":"2017-01-23T23:42:17","slug":"why-transcanada-drilled-under-the-potomac-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2702","title":{"rendered":"Why TransCanada Drilled Under the Potomac River"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this month, TransCanada took a barge across the C&amp;O Canal to the Hancock Boat House, took the barge up river about a mile and a half and drilled a hole under the Potomac River.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2701\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/drill-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"drill\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/drill-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/drill-768x994.jpg 768w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/drill-791x1024.jpg 791w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/drill.jpg 1275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 232px) 100vw, 232px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Why?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TransCanada is proposing to construct a new interstate natural gas transmission pipeline that will cross under the Potomac River and the historic C&amp;O Canal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2655\">TransCanada has applied to the National Park Service for a permit<\/a> to survey the region, but has yet to receive the go ahead on that permit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/transcanada-1.pdf\">The company did however get permission from the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Army Corps of Engineers<\/a> to conduct a test bore under the Potomac River.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That test was completed in one day on January 17.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a permit application made to the U.S. Corps of Engineers and Maryland Department of the Environment, on that day, TransCanada engaged in \u201cgeotechnical testing within the Potomac River to determine if the geology is favorable to cross the river using horizontal drilling technology.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A barge was launched from the Hancock Boat House and motored upstream to the site of the proposed pipeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the permit application, \u201ca bore will be conducted within an enclosed contained area to ensure sediment or drilling mud is not released into the river during the testing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis will be accomplished through installing a casing around the bore location that will be dewatered prior to the starting of the boring,\u201d the permit said. \u201cAll water removed from the casing during dewatering, sediment from the bore and any drilling mud will be captured and taken offsite for disposal to ensure that nothing is released into the river.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The application says that \u201crotary drilling will be performed until rock is encountered.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce rock is encountered, mud rotary drilling will cease and rock core drilling will begin. The rock coring process involves inserting a 2\u201d NQ double barrel into the outer casing and directly into rock. The NQ double barrel allows for the rock core to be pulled to the surface and maintain an open bore hole for further coring.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The application says that the bore hole will be \u201cgrouted upon completion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2696\">TransCanada is planning an open house<\/a> to discuss its plans for the pipeline February 9 at 6 pm at the Hancock Town Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this month, TransCanada took a barge across the C&amp;O Canal to the Hancock Boat House, took the barge up river about a mile and a half and drilled a hole under the Potomac River.
