{"id":2691,"date":"2016-12-21T18:28:04","date_gmt":"2016-12-21T23:28:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2691"},"modified":"2016-12-21T18:28:04","modified_gmt":"2016-12-21T23:28:04","slug":"national-park-service-weighs-in-on-transcanada-pipeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2691","title":{"rendered":"National Park Service Weighs in on TransCanada Pipeline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Park Service has yet to approve an application for TransCanada to survey an area just west of Hancock, Maryland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2692\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/transcanada-300x113.png\" alt=\"transcanada\" width=\"300\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/transcanada-300x113.png 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/transcanada.png 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company plans to lay a natural gas pipeline under the historic C&amp;O Canal and the Potomac River. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2582\">The proposal has drawn protests<\/a> from residents concerned about the impact of the gas pipeline on the river and the canal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TransCanada applied for a survey permit in September 2016 saying it hoped to begin the survey in October and complete the survey by the end of this year \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2655\">and that it hoped to apply for a construction permit this month. <\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the National Park Service is sitting on the application to survey and won\u2019t say why.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have only received requests for survey work,\u201d said National Park Service spokesperson Jenny Anzelmo-Sarles. \u201cWe are reviewing these requests and have not issued any permits to the company at this time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe company has not applied for a right-of-way permit at this time,\u201d Anzelmo-Sarles said. \u201cIf and when the company submits an application, careful consideration will be given to the request to evaluate any potential impacts at that time. The National Park Service must consider the purposes and resources of the affected national park system, as expressed in statutes, regulations, and policies. The National Park Service values public input and will strive to make sure the public and relevant stakeholders are kept up-to-date on the project.
