{"id":2649,"date":"2016-12-04T07:06:44","date_gmt":"2016-12-04T12:06:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2649"},"modified":"2016-12-04T07:20:53","modified_gmt":"2016-12-04T12:20:53","slug":"daryl-cowles-supports-mountaineer-gas-pipeline-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2649","title":{"rendered":"Daryl Cowles Supports Mountaineer Gas Pipeline Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">House of Delegates Majority Leader Daryl Cowles is supporting the Mountaineer Gas proposed pipeline that would cut through Berkeley Springs and Morgan County.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ms8VqhsLYDI\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview with Russell Mokhiber on This Week in Morgan County, Cowles said that while he agreed it was \u201cunfair\u201d for the company to be bullying landowners with the threat of eminent domain, Mountaineer Gas was empowered to use eminent domain since the state\u2019s Public Service Commission has determined the pipeline project was necessary and in the public\u2019s interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cowles agreed that the country should be transitioning to renewable energy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd I think we are, to some degree,\u201d Cowles said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMountain View Solar has a presence at 522 business park in southern Morgan County, \u201c said Cowles, who was recently appointed as executive director of the Morgan County Economic Development Authority. \u201cWe are transitioning to some degree now. But that doesn\u2019t change the fact that you need a mix of all of those types of energy to have a vibrant, well rounded economy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that Mountain View Solar is based here in Morgan County, shouldn\u2019t Cowles be taking a leadership role in the legislature to push for renewable energy?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t want to pick winners and losers,\u201d Cowles said. \u201cI don\u2019t want to pick solar out and say &#8212; I\u2019m going to push for this because there is a small business in my community that\u2019s going to benefit. We need a good energy base that supplies good jobs for everybody &#8212; whether that\u2019s gas generated energy, or coal generated energy or renewable energy &#8212; and preferably a mix of all of those things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cowles said that he was not convinced that fossil fuels is driving climate change, but it\u2019s important to move to a renewable energy economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut you have to be careful about costs,\u201d Cowles said. \u201cI represent working families. You can\u2019t afford to have their electric bills doubled for some political reason to pick a winner and loser. You need to have a good mix and be conscious of the economic effects of your policy positions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the economic development front, Cowles said he was excited about the rail trail project, some new life being breathed into the Cacapon State Park $25 million renovation, Coolfont recently being sold, the Country Inn coming back, and Procter &amp; Gamble partnering with Blue Ridge Community College at the old hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>House of Delegates Majority Leader Daryl Cowles is supporting the Mountaineer Gas proposed pipeline that would cut through Berkeley Springs and Morgan County.
