One is a Columbia Gas Transmission pipeline project that is proposed to go under the C&amp;O Canal and the Potomac River just west of Hancock, Maryland. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That pipeline would deliver fracked gas from Pennsylvania to West Virginia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A second proposed pipeline would run from the end of the Columbia Gas pipeline in northern Morgan County south to Berkeley Springs and then east to Berkeley and Jefferson Counties.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2624\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2624\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2624\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/bs-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Berkeley Springs\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/bs-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/bs-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/bs-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2624\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Berkeley Springs<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citizens from West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania <a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2582\">protested the Columbia Gas project in Hancock<\/a> earlier this month and last week confronted the Morgan County Commissioners for supporting the Mountaineer Gas pipeline in May 2016 before anything was known about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent years, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_pipeline_accidents_in_the_United_States_in_the_21st_century\">a number of pipeline explosions<\/a> have shaken communities across the country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just yesterday, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/birmingham\/index.ssf\/2016\/11\/shelby_county_gasoline_pipelin.html\">a gasoline pipeline in Alabama blew out, killing one and injuring several others. \u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The owner of the pipeline, Colonial Pipeline, said the explosion occurred around 2 p.m. Monday, when contractors working for Colonial struck the pipe with a trackhoe.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2625\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2625\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2625\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/nine-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Route 9 East\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/nine-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/nine-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/nine-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2625\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Route 9 East<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December 11, 2012, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wvgazettemail.com\/News\/SpecialReports\/SissonvillePipelineExplosion\">Columbia Gas Transmission natural gas pipeline exploded near Sissonville, West Virginia<\/a> destroyed several homes. The resulting fire melted an over 800 foot section of Interstate 77.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal inspectors found that the gas pipeline was corroded and hadn&#8217;t been inspected since 1988. They said that Columbia Gas Transmission officials should have realized the gas pipeline was at risk of failure, because gas company inspectors had found corrosion in two other lines in the same system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in 2010, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2010_San_Bruno_pipeline_explosion\">a Pacific Gas &amp; Electric natural gas pipeline blew up west of San Francisco killing eight people. <\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In August of this year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.corporatecrimereporter.com\/news\/200\/pge-guilty-of-violating-pipeline-safety-law-and-obstruction\/\">the company was found guilty<\/a> of violating federal safety laws in connection with the deadly explosion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposed route of the Mountaineer Gas line through the eastern panhandle will cut close to schools and homes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Farmers have complained of <a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2556\">bullying by Mountaineer Gas agents seeking to secure rights of way with threats of using eminent domain.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Signs saying Just Say No to the Gas Pipeline signs are popping up in Berkeley Springs and around the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.
