{"id":2590,"date":"2016-10-24T19:33:49","date_gmt":"2016-10-24T23:33:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2590"},"modified":"2016-10-25T11:23:41","modified_gmt":"2016-10-25T15:23:41","slug":"dollar-general-to-decide-on-hotly-contested-proposed-berkeley-springs-store-within-weeks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2590","title":{"rendered":"Dollar General to Decide on Contested Proposed Berkeley Springs Store Within Weeks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dollar General says it is within weeks of deciding whether to go forward with a hotly contested proposed store ten miles south of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2075\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/DollarGeneralPostcard1.pdf-1-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"DollarGeneralPostcard1.pdf-1\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/DollarGeneralPostcard1.pdf-1-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/DollarGeneralPostcard1.pdf-1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are still in our due diligence phase on the location,\u201d said Dollar General spokesperson Crystal Ghassemi. \u201cI hope to have a final decision here in the coming weeks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s been more than two weeks since the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.courtswv.gov\/supreme-court\/memo-decisions\/fall2016\/15-1058memo.pdf\">West Virginia Supreme Court rejected a challenge<\/a> from neighboring homeowners. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Dollar General has yet to begin the process of closing on the property or pay for the building permit from the Morgan County Planning Commission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citizens in the surrounding neighborhood have been protesting in Morgan County and directly to Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos for more than a year, making the case that the rural residential neighborhood across from one of the West Virginia\u2019s premiere state parks \u2013 Cacapon State Park \u2013 is the wrong place for a dollar store.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And residents are planning further protests if the company decides to move forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Supreme Court of West Virginia has spoken and determined that construction the new Dollar General store in the Oakland Overlook neighborhood was properly approved by the Planning Commission,\u201d said Paul Stern, a spokesperson for the group challenging Dollar General. \u201cNevertheless, there remains an opportunity for Dollar General to garner the goodwill of all Morgan County residents \u2013 and shoppers \u2013 by working with us to find a location that would better respect the rural nature of our community.
