{"id":2516,"date":"2016-10-01T08:01:28","date_gmt":"2016-10-01T12:01:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2516"},"modified":"2016-10-01T08:01:28","modified_gmt":"2016-10-01T12:01:28","slug":"more-than-fifty-citizens-meet-in-berkeley-springs-to-organize-to-defeat-proposed-mountaineer-gas-pipeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2516","title":{"rendered":"More Than Fifty Citizens Meet in Berkeley Springs to Organize to Defeat Proposed Mountaineer Gas Pipeline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than fifty citizens from across the eastern panhandle met in Berkeley Springs Friday night to organize to defeat the proposed Mountaineer Gas pipeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2517\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/meeting-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"meeting\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/meeting-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/meeting.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The natural gas pipeline would cut from the Maryland border at Hancock south to Berkeley Springs and then move east to Martinsburg and then on to Jefferson County.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many farmers and landowners who attended the meeting spoke of hardball tactics used by Mountaineer Gas in recent weeks to pressure them into signing rights of way to the company for the pipeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One citizen told the story of an elderly couple who were pressured into signing away their property after being told that if they didn\u2019t sign, they would get a lot less money later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other residents said that Mountaineer Gas presented the pipeline as an inevitability &#8212; telling them that it was coming through \u201cwhether you like it or not\u201d because the pipeline project was a &#8220;public project&#8221; and that eminent domain would be used to take their property if they didn\u2019t sign it over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one at the meeting spoke in favor of the pipeline. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost everyone who spoke said they was opposed to the pipeline &#8212; either because of the pressure tactics being used by Mountaineer Gas, fear of property value loss &#8212; or because they were concerned about environmental and safety considerations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One woman said that when U.S. Silica blasts at the nearby sand mine, she can feel the tremors and wondered what impact the blasting would have on a gas pipeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others raised concerns about the route of the proposed pipeline &#8212; going so close to schools along Route 9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some were opposed to Morgan County being treated as a \u201csacrifice zone\u201d for the benefit of large fossil fuel corporations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some wanted West Virginia to take the lead in transitioning away from fossil fuels and toward solar and other alternative energies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abigail Benjamin, an environmental lawyer who attended the meeting, said she would be travelling to Charleston next week to represent the Blue Heron Environmental Network and residents at the meeting before the West Virginia Public Service Commission. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She would raise objections to the project and ask that the Commission reject the Mountaineer Gas proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the two hour meeting, the group discussed other strategies to defeat the pipeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than fifty citizens from across the eastern panhandle met in Berkeley Springs Friday night to organize to defeat the proposed Mountaineer Gas pipeline.
