{"id":2483,"date":"2016-09-13T17:22:16","date_gmt":"2016-09-13T21:22:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2483"},"modified":"2016-09-13T17:26:10","modified_gmt":"2016-09-13T21:26:10","slug":"protest-against-mountaineer-gas-pipeline-spreads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2483","title":{"rendered":"Protest Against Mountaineer Gas Pipeline Spreads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The protest against Mountaineer Gas Company\u2019s proposed natural gas pipeline is spreading across the eastern panhandle of West Virginia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2484\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/backcreek-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"backcreek\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/backcreek-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/backcreek-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/backcreek-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/backcreek.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berkeley County Council Member Elaine Mauck has sent a letter to the West Virginia Public Service Commission protesting the pipeline as a threat to Back Creek. The proposed pipeline would go under Back Creek.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBack Creek is one of two clean streams in West Virginia,\u201d Mauck wrote. \u201cThe Mountaineer Gas people have not contacted anyone from the Berkeley County Planning or Engineering. The company\u2019s behavior toward the citizens is inexcusable &#8212; telling them that they will get a right of way by eminent domain with or without their permission.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mauck said that \u201cthe permanent and extensive damage that is projected from this unwanted gas line could be prevented if this line was not done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIs Mountaineer Gas going to provide the millions it will take to clean up this mess when damaged?\u201d she asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mauck asked that the Public Service Commission not approve the proposed line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back Creek residents Sherry Evasic and Richard Kidwell have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psc.state.wv.us\/scripts\/WebDocket\/ViewDocument.cfm?CaseActivityID=457544&amp;NotType=%27WebDocket%27\">filed a protest with the Public Service Commission.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCounty Council contacts have reported no business requests for natural gas. No need\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been provided, then no $45 million 30 mile pipeline,\u201d they wrote. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no state infrastructure of full time inspectors, regulation enforcement officials or funding sources for fixers,\u201d they wrote. \u201cThe destruction scenario has been repeated many times in West Virginia. So no new results are expected in this watershed from the transit of the pipeline.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.psc.state.wv.us\/scripts\/WebDocket\/ViewDocument.cfm?CaseActivityID=458149\">Aileen Curfman of Shepherdstown<\/a> said that she opposed the pipeline because \u201cWest Virginia should be looking to clean energy sources, not to increased use of fossil fuels.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis project would provide a market for gas produced in Pennsylvania by fracking,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which can result in pollution of groundwater used for drinking,\u201d Curfman wrote. \u201cThe Eastern\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panhandle has seen several large solar energy installations. This is a cleaner technology which does not increase our carbon footprint and does not endanger groundwater.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psc.state.wv.us\/scripts\/WebDocket\/ViewDocument.cfm?CaseActivityID=458149\">Alison McNabb of Lakewood<\/a> said she opposed the pipeline because \u201cthe USA\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">must develop alternate energy sources to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and gases that contribute to global warming.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe must protect and preserve our air and water,\u201d she wrote. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The protest against Mountaineer Gas Company\u2019s proposed natural gas pipeline is spreading across the eastern panhandle of West Virginia.
