He was 87.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2459\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/mccoy-241x300.gif\" alt=\"mccoy\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Troubadour was named after McCoy\u2019s friend, the Texas Troubadour \u2014 the late Ernest Tubb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McCoy started his career in music in the 1950s when he hosted a half hour country music radio show every Saturday on WINC in Winchester, Virginia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McCoy toured the country with his own band &#8212; Jim McCoy and the Melody Playboys &#8212; and recorded with a major Nashville label.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A young Patsy Cline got her start on McCoy\u2019s WINC radio show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPatsy Cline lived in Winchester, not too far from the radio station,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6rt7E5GYcuA\">McCoy told This Week in Morgan County in an interview earlier this year.<\/a> \u201cWe were using one microphone. Patsy was 14 years old. She comes into the radio station. I didn\u2019t talk her that day. But the next Saturday she was there. And she said \u2014 I want to sing. I don\u2019t want no money. I just want to sing. We hadn\u2019t rehearsed. I said \u2014 well, we need to rehearse. When I heard her sing, I will never forget it. I knew she was going to be a big one. She was a great singer at 14. People don\u2019t know it but she played a little piano too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Troubadour &#8212; dubbed by Danish television as the last honky tonk in America &#8212; is home to a yearly Patsy Cline festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McCoy had boundless energy and a dry sense of humor &#8212; penning such classic country songs as \u201cDivorce Me Like a Woman, Leave Me Like a Man,\u201d \u201cIf the Truth is Gonna Hurt Just Lie to Me,\u201d and \u201cMomma Pinch a Penny While Daddy Throws a Dollar Away.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McCoy and his doctor &#8212; Matt Hahn &#8212; released those songs and others at a CD release party in 2008 at the Troubadour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that party, McCoy brought the house down when he sang Ernest Tubb\u2019s classic &#8212; Waltz Across Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Sa-7sbRqehI\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A biography by John Douglas of McCoy titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Joltin-Jim-McCoys-Country-Music\/dp\/1516948114\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1473291330&#038;sr=8-1&#038;keywords=joltin+jim+mccoy\">Joltin\u2019 Jim: Jim McCoy\u2019s Life in Country Music<\/a> was published in 2007.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In it, Charlie Dick, Patsy Cline\u2019s husband and McCoy\u2019s good friend, says that he \u201creally became close friends with Jim after Patsy died. Jim was even a pall bearer at Patsy\u2019s funeral.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnly after getting to know him more personally did I realize just how much country music meant to him and how much Jim meant to country music. He was always willing to help local talents, whether it was having them appear with him at shows, or getting them connected to the music business in Nashville. I am sure there are many people who can thank Jim for all the help he gave them in their careers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of Jim\u2019s idols was Ernest Tubb, The Texas Troubadour. Jim was honored to become a friend of Ernest\u2019s. When Jim opened his country music venue in West Virginia, he named it \u201cThe Troubadour\u201d in honor of his friend. Even today it is still a hot spot. Jim operates The Troubadour with the help of his lovely wife, Bertha.
