{"id":2455,"date":"2016-09-07T16:06:22","date_gmt":"2016-09-07T20:06:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2455"},"modified":"2016-09-08T12:11:04","modified_gmt":"2016-09-08T16:11:04","slug":"dollar-general-fined-again-for-jeopardizing-worker-and-customer-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2455","title":{"rendered":"Dollar General Fined Again for Jeopardizing Worker and Customer Safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an emergency, a blocked exit can be the difference between life and death for employees and customers alike.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2075\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/DollarGeneralPostcard1.pdf-1-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"DollarGeneralPostcard1.pdf-1\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/DollarGeneralPostcard1.pdf-1-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/DollarGeneralPostcard1.pdf-1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, Dollar General &#8211; one of the nation&#8217;s largest discount retailers &#8211; continues to ignore federal workplace safety inspectors who have found repeated instances where the company allows stacked merchandise to block exit routes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responding to a complaint, U.S. Department of Labor&#8217;s Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspectors again found blocked exits and other hazards, this time on August 4, 2016, at the company&#8217;s store in Van Buren. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, the agency issued one repeated, one serious citation and one other-than-serious safety citation on Sept. 1, 2016. The Van Buren store now faces proposed total penalties of $97,988.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 2010, OSHA has found more than 100 safety and health violations at Dollar General stores nationwide. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headquartered in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, the company operates more than 12,000 stores in 43 states and employs about 100,000 workers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fiscal 2015, the retailer recorded sales of $20.4 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In an emergency, every second matters. Neither workers nor customers should have to fight their way through piles of merchandise to exit a building safely,&#8221; said Bill McDonald, OSHA&#8217;s area director in St. Louis. &#8220;As an organization, Dollar General must take responsibility to review its safety and health programs and fix these hazards at all of its stores nationwide now before tragedy strikes.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In an emergency, a blocked exit can be the difference between life and death for employees and customers alike.
