{"id":2352,"date":"2016-06-19T15:59:04","date_gmt":"2016-06-19T19:59:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2352"},"modified":"2016-06-20T09:30:48","modified_gmt":"2016-06-20T13:30:48","slug":"regan-ousted-by-manchin-and-puccio-controlled-west-virginia-democratic-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2352","title":{"rendered":"Chris Regan Ousted by Joe Manchin and Larry Puccio Controlled West Virginia Democratic Party"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last month, Bernie Sanders defeated Hillary Clinton in the West Virginia Democratic primary &#8212; 51 percent to 36 percent.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2353\" style=\"width: 211px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/regan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2353\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2353\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/regan.jpg\" alt=\"Chris Regan\" width=\"201\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2353\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chris Regan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But last week in Charleston, at the state Democratic convention in the race for chair of the party, the candidate who supported Hillary Clinton &#8212; Chair Belinda Biafore &#8212; defeated the candidate who supported Bernie Sanders &#8212; Vice Chair Chris Regan.<\/p>\n<p>Morgan County Democrat Bibi Hahn says that Regan was ousted despite the fact that he \u201chas done more to attract young Democrats &#8212; he and Bernie together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChris Regan has energized everybody &#8212; he has a great <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeyesterday.com\/\">blog that everybody reads<\/a>,\u201d Hahn said. \u201cHe came out early for Bernie &#8212; and eventually, so did West Virginia. It\u2019s important to weigh in the side of your state instead of your party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But on June 11, the state Democratic Party executive committee did the opposite &#8212; and voted 38 to 26 to re-elect Biafore as state chair &#8212; and to oust Regan as vice chair.<\/p>\n<p>Before the vote, in a speech to the executive committee, Regan ripped the party\u2019s establishment, led by Senator Joe Manchin and Manchin operative Larry Puccio.<br \/>\n\u201cOur people are suffering,\u201d Regan told the convention. \u201cOur job is to feed and take care of them, not to feed and take care of ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe executive committee is elected by all the Democrats, from all the districts of the state,\u201d Regan said. \u201cIt is supposed to be the supreme governing authority for the Democratic Party. But that does not occur. Instead, the committee is told, every once in awhile, that only one or two particular Democrats matter, and it must give its authority away and let the few dictate every decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know what the results have been,\u201d Regan said. \u201cDoubtless we are going to talk about unity. And unity is important. But it is a false unity when all it means is that a few powerful people get everything they want. Unity means bringing everyone on board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn December, Larry Puccio told me that if circumstances allowed, he would have his candidate not only for chair, but for vice chair when this election rolled around, and therefore I would be gotten rid of. That\u2019s what he means by \u2018unity\u2019 &#8212; we are united when he gets everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s unite around something else. Let\u2019s unite around a party that is for all the Democrats and not just the powerful few. Let\u2019s unite around a party for all the places in West Virginia, including southern West Virginia and the eastern panhandle, that have no representation on our board. Let\u2019s unite around a party that lives for the people out there &#8212; yes at the expense of the people in here &#8212; and not the other way around.
