{"id":2162,"date":"2016-02-09T18:08:23","date_gmt":"2016-02-09T23:08:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2162"},"modified":"2016-02-09T18:08:23","modified_gmt":"2016-02-09T23:08:23","slug":"sammi-brown-to-challenge-jill-upson-for-west-virginia-house-of-delegates-seat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=2162","title":{"rendered":"Sammi Brown to Challenge Jill Upson for West Virginia House of Delegates Seat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sammi Brown will be the Democratic candidate for the House of Delegates race in the 65th district.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2161\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sammibrown.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2161\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2161\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sammibrown-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Sammi Brown\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sammibrown-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sammibrown.jpg 308w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2161\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sammi Brown<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 65th district includes both Charles Town and Ranson in Jefferson County. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The seat is currently held by Jill Upson (R). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brown serves as a consultant for the AFL-CIO and other labor affiliates. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She is the Vice President of the Eastern Panhandle Young Democrats, a native of Charles Town, and earned both her Bachelor\u2019s and MBA from Shepherd University. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brown says she wants to be the catalyst for \u201creal change in the political landscape.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis state was built on the backs of our working families,\u201d Brown says. \u201cYet we\u2019ve repaid them with what? Cuts? Low pay? Less Benefits? No. West Virginians deserve better than that. West Virginians should be able to live, work and thrive in their home state &#8212; and they deserve someone who will actually fight to make that happen.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brown says she is an advocate, organizer, and ally for multiple progressive groups, and is active in a wide range of community organizations across Jefferson and Berkeley counties. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the Eastern Panhandle Young Democrats, she also serves as National Committeewoman of West Virginia Young Democrats, Secretary of Mid Atlantic Young Democrats, as well as a member of local associations &#8212; the Jefferson County NAACP and the League of Women Voters. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She is an ally to Fairness WV and Planned Parenthood South East, and has also chartered West Virginia\u2019s Young Active Labor Leaders chapter, which is recognized through the AFL-CIO\u2019s NextUp Initiative &#8212; all in a concerted effort to mobilize West Virginians around growth and activism. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur population is rapidly decreasing,\u201d Brown said. \u201cOur youth has become our greatest export. We\u2019ve continued to marginalize the men, women, and children that we should be indebted to. We\u2019re losing our people because, quite frankly, they don\u2019t see their opportunities here. Essentially, we\u2019ve told them they don\u2019t deserve as much.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We\u2019re making cuts and decreasing funding to essential programs instead of investing in communities and creating the opportunities necessary for sustainable growth. We\u2019re rejecting the idea of inclusion. This simply isn\u2019t what the people of West Virginia want. This isn\u2019t what they stand for.
