<\/a>David Schwartz<\/p><\/div>\n
Schwartz was a world renowned economist and a passionate advocate for\u00a0consumer protections. His work focused on regulatory issues related to the natural gas\u00a0and electric power industries.<\/p>\n
He graduated from University of Maryland with a BS in\u00a0Economics in 1944 and was awarded his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin in\u00a01950.<\/p>\n
He taught economics at the University of Wisconsin from 1947 to 1950. He then\u00a0spent two years in Europe teaching with the University of Maryland Overseas Program.<\/p>\n
Schwartz returned to the United States in 1953 to engage in full-time research at the\u00a0University of Maryland in College Park before joining the Federal Power Commission —\u00a0now the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission — where he worked from 1965 to 1974,\u00a0ultimately serving as Assistant Chief of the Office of Economics.<\/p>\n
He frequently testified\u00a0before Congressional committees, never hesitating to go against political currents in the\u00a0defense of his strongly held principles.<\/p>\n
In 1975, he was awarded an academic\u00a0appointment from the National Science Foundation.<\/p>\n
From 1976 to 1991, as an\u00a0independent consultant, he worked with, among others, Ohio Senator Howard\u00a0Metzenbaum.<\/p>\n
He was also an adjunct professor at Michigan State University. In the late\u00a01980s, he traveled to South Africa with the commission to research and report on\u00a0alternatives for providing electricity to the South African people.<\/p>\n
He retired to Berkeley\u00a0Springs and developed a passion for organic gardening and pursued his love of opera.<\/p>\n
He and his wife Nina were active and beloved members of the community.<\/p>\n
Schwartz was born in New York City in 1921. He was preceded in death by his wifeof 64 years Nina Kragh Schwartz, his brother Morrie Schwartz of Massachusetts, and\u00a0his parents Charlie and Eva Schwartz of New York City. He is survived by a son, Erik,\u00a0and two nephews, as well as innumerable friends.<\/p>\n
Friends will be received on Thursday, January 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson\u00a0Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. Services\u00a0and interment will be private.<\/p>\n
