{"id":187,"date":"2012-05-08T08:17:03","date_gmt":"2012-05-08T12:17:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=187"},"modified":"2012-05-08T08:17:03","modified_gmt":"2012-05-08T12:17:03","slug":"senator-manchin-single-payer-and-personal-responsibility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=187","title":{"rendered":"Senator Manchin Single Payer and Personal Responsibility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year, Senator Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia) visited Berkeley Springs, West Virginia and was asked about Glass-Steagall, the depression era law that prevented banks from gambling with your savings account.<\/p>\n<p>Glass-Steagall was repealed by President Clinton in 1999.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OkIR00SPXUM\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Many economists believe that the repeal of Glass-Steagall had a lot to do with the most recent economic collapse.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, at the Peking Restaurant in Martinsburg, West Virginia, Senator Manchin was asked about single payer national health insurance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=A0nI41XKx5Q\">Senator Manchin said he didn\u2019t know enough about single payer to take a position on it.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is getting embarrassing.<\/p>\n<p>At the Peking Restaurant, Manchin was asked about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.singlepayeraction.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/brief.pdf\">an amicus brief<\/a> filed by 50 doctors calling on the Supreme Court to strike down the Obama mandate in favor of a single payer national health insurance system.<\/p>\n<p>Manchin\u2019s first reaction \u2013 we don\u2019t have the support for a single payer system.<\/p>\n<p>Why is there so little support in Congress for single payer?<\/p>\n<p>Because people like Manchin don\u2019t support it.<\/p>\n<p>Or as Manchin said when asked directly whether he would support a single payer system \u2013 \u201cI don\u2019t know enough about it to tell you I could support it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Note to Senator Manchin \u2013 here are two great web sites that will tell you all you need to know about single payer \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/pnhp.org\/\">Physicians for a National Health Program<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/singlepayeraction.org\/\">Single Payer Action.<\/a> Don\u2019t try and pull that one on us again, okay?)<\/p>\n<p>Manchin said he\u2019s opposed to the Obama mandate requiring every citizen to buy health insurance from private health insurance corporations.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said \u2013 \u201cIf the Supreme Court rules it unconstitutional, what is Plan B?\u201d Manchin asked.<\/p>\n<p>Well, Plan B is single payer \u2013 a single payer system where everybody is in, nobody is out \u2013 like the VA, like Medicare.<\/p>\n<p>A single payer system that most western industrialized countries have adopted.<\/p>\n<p>Why not?<\/p>\n<p>Manchin comes up with this \u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has got to be personal responsibility,\u201d Manchin said. \u201cThere is no incentive to keep yourself in better shape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yes, there has to be personal responsibility, Senator.<\/p>\n<p>Starting with you.<\/p>\n<p>Your campaign banks accounts are getting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/politicians\/contrib.php?cycle=Career&amp;cid=N00032838&amp;type=I%22%20target=\">fat with corporate contributions. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>You are supposed to represent the people of West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>Not the corporations.<\/p>\n<p>Why do you keep siding with your corporate funders?<\/p>\n<p>And turning your back on your constituents?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year, Senator Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia) visited Berkeley Springs, West Virginia and was asked about Glass-Steagall, the depression era law that prevented banks from gambling with your savings account.
