{"id":1406,"date":"2014-10-24T11:12:30","date_gmt":"2014-10-24T15:12:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=1406"},"modified":"2014-10-24T11:12:30","modified_gmt":"2014-10-24T15:12:30","slug":"alex-mooney-dodges-question-on-minimum-wage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=1406","title":{"rendered":"Alex Mooney Dodges Question on Minimum Wage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Republican Alex Mooney (WV-2) stood by his hard right positions this morning &#8212; on abortion, guns, coal and Obamacare.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/mooney.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1408\" title=\"mooney\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/mooney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"148\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But like his fellow West Virginia Republican &#8212; U.S. Senate candidate Shelley Moore Capito &#8212; Mooney refused to answer a question on whether he would support federal legislation to raise the minimum wage. (Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=1378\">Capito refused to answer a question<\/a> from a reporter who was asking about Capito&#8217;s position on raising the minimum wage.)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Mooney was interviewed this morning on Metronews Talkline show with Hoppy Kercheval.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kercheval is philosophically opposed to not just raising the minimum wage, but the minimum wage itself.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cDo you support or oppose raising the minimum wage?\u201d Kercheval asked.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThat\u2019s really a state decision &#8212; the state can handle that,\u201d Mooney said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWell, it\u2019s a federal issue too,\u201d Kercheval said. \u201cThe President has proposed raising the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour. If you were in Congress, would you support or oppose it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI\u2019d have to consider it when I got there,\u201d Mooney said. \u201cAs with all issues, it\u2019s better to make those kinds of decisions at the local level. I will have to consider it when I get there, to see what they are proposing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI\u2019m against it,\u201d Kercheval said. \u201cI don\u2019t think the state has any point in determining the value of labor. Do you have a philosophical view on it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cYes, philosophically local decisions should be made locally,\u201d Mooney said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=1058\">Mooney released a poll<\/a> showing him ahead of his Democratic rival Nick Casey by 10 points, with Independent Ed Rabel securing 10 percent of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>But the race is tightening, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centerforpolitics.org\/crystalball\/\">Sabato&#8217;s Crystal Ball earlier this week<\/a> declaring the race a toss-up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=1248\">Rabel is the only candidate<\/a> in the race who has taken a position in favor of raising the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican Alex Mooney (WV-2) stood by his hard right positions this morning &#8212; on abortion, guns, coal and Obamacare.
