{"id":1378,"date":"2014-10-18T11:25:37","date_gmt":"2014-10-18T15:25:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=1378"},"modified":"2014-10-18T11:25:37","modified_gmt":"2014-10-18T15:25:37","slug":"capito-refuses-to-answer-question-on-minimum-wage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=1378","title":{"rendered":"Capito Refuses to Answer Question on Minimum Wage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">In a statewide debate earlier this month between U.S. Senate candidates Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virginia) and Democratic Secretary of State Natalie Tennant, Capito said that she would \u201clook favorably upon raising the minimum wage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VyAAxNlrdZw\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If that is true, why won\u2019t she sign a discharge petition to bring HR 1010 to the floor of the House of Representatives for a vote?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That was a question that Capito refused to answer yesterday at a campaign appearance in Romney, West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When a reporter tried twice to ask the question, Capito just ignored it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Capito has refused to answer a now <a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=548\">15-month old petition from 400 of her constituents<\/a> asking for a public meeting in Capito\u2019s Second Congressional district to discuss raising the minimum wage.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20060731122616\/http:\/www.house.gov\/shays\/news\/2006\/july\/minimumwage.pdf\">a 2006 letter to then House Majority Leader John Boehner<\/a>, Capito wrote that &#8220;Nobody working full time should have to live in poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But at the debate with Tennant earlier this month, Capito said that the minimum wage was \u201cnot meant to be a wage to raise your families and create a life for a family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">H.R. 1010 would raise the minimum wage to $10.10 over three years.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Most Congressional observers believe that given the popularity of raising the minimum wage &#8212; it polls over 70 percent &#8212; it would pass into law if a vote were taken today.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But the Republican leadership in the House has blocked a minimum wage raise from coming to the floor for a vote.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.give1010avote.org\/\">Congressman Tim Bishop (D-NY) has been circulating a discharge petition<\/a>, which, if signed by 218 House members, would force a vote on H.R. 1010.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One hundred and ninety five House members have signed the discharge petition, meaning only 23 more member signatures are required to bring H.R. 1010 to a vote and most likely pass it into law.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a statewide debate earlier this month between U.S. Senate candidates Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virginia) and Democratic Secretary of State Natalie Tennant, Capito said that she would \u201clook favorably upon raising the minimum wage.\u201d If that is true, &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=1378\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1378","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1378","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=1378"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1378\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=1378"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=1378"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=1378"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
