{"id":1320,"date":"2014-09-29T12:54:30","date_gmt":"2014-09-29T16:54:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=1320"},"modified":"2014-09-29T12:54:30","modified_gmt":"2014-09-29T16:54:30","slug":"hutchinson-calls-on-cowles-to-oppose-fracking-under-the-ohio-river-and-on-public-lands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=1320","title":{"rendered":"Hutchinson Calls on Cowles to Oppose Fracking Under the Ohio River and On Public Lands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Independent Brenda Hutchinson is calling on her opponent Republican Daryl Cowles (West Virginia House of Delegates 58) to join with her in opposing plans by Democratic Governor Earl Ray Tomblin to allow hydraulic fracturing for natural gas (fracking) under the Ohio River and on public lands.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/brendaphoto.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1321\" title=\"brendaphoto\" src=\"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/brendaphoto.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenfieldreporter.com\/view\/story\/6388bd0474794b2799fb108a019a5354\/WV--Ohio-River-Fracking\">The Associated Press reported last week<\/a> that Tomblin\u2019s administration opened bids to drill under the northern section of the Ohio River, which serves as a natural border with Ohio. \u201cOfficials said that other river tracts could be next, and a wildlife management area is under consideration,\u201d the AP reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I read the article in the paper yesterday about plans to allow for fracking under the Ohio River and on public lands, I was alarmed,\u201d Hutchinson said. \u201cDidn\u2019t West Virginia\u2019s economy just take a hit in January when the drinking water of 300,000 people in January was contaminated by a chemical spill?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernor Tomblin might try and reassure the public that we have strong enough regulations and enforcement to safeguard against an accident under the Ohio River or on public lands, but after the January chemical spill and given the fossil fuel industry&#8217;s influence over our government, who will believe him?
