{"id":1139,"date":"2014-07-23T14:10:14","date_gmt":"2014-07-23T18:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=1139"},"modified":"2014-07-23T14:10:14","modified_gmt":"2014-07-23T18:10:14","slug":"rupp-on-rabel-casey-mooney-jones-race-watch-volatile-eastern-panhandle-independents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morgancountyusa.org\/?p=1139","title":{"rendered":"Rob Rupp on Rabel Casey Mooney Jones Race: Watch Volatile Eastern Panhandle Independents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Don\u2019t overlook West Virginia&#8217;s Eastern Panhandle independents in the four way race for Congress between Democrat Nick Casey, Republican Alex Mooney, Libertarian Davy Jones and Independent Ed Rabel.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That\u2019s the take of West Virginia Wesleyan Professor Robert Rupp.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QCrOM9BofG4\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Rupp was on Hoppy Kercheval&#8217;s statewide Metronews Talkline radio program this morning.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe are talking about the Second Congressional District,\u201d Rupp said \u201cAnd the most important player this year in the Second District is the Eastern Panhandle. There are a lot of independents over there. There are a lot of new people coming in that area.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;And you got this slick news person (Rabel) who is coming back &#8212; he\u2019s a comebacker, which is powerful in West Virginia and he\u2019s delivering a populist message and he\u2019s doing it in the Panhandle,&#8221; Rupp said. &#8220;I\u2019ll be glad when the elections over, because I\u2019ll be able to tell you how it all worked out. Right now I can\u2019t.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Rupp said that in a race with Mooney (\u201ca tea party conservative\u201d) and Casey (\u201ca Democrat trying to moderate\u201d) &#8212; \u201cwhat is left out is that 20 percent to 25 percent of\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">very liberals in this state who don\u2019t feel as if they are being represented.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThat\u2019s one thing &#8212; he has a base to tap into,\u201d Rupp said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cTwo &#8212; he\u2019s very dynamic,\u201d Rupp said. \u201cMy bet is that when there is a debate between the three, we\u2019re going to pick him as the winner &#8212; because he\u2019s very articulate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cAnd third, and perhaps most important of all is that he has this populist message.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">There are a lot of angry people who are upset. This is the year of anti-incumbent. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">At least for a segment of the population, that populist rhetoric is going to make a difference. Is it going to win? No, but will it mobilize voters? Yes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Rupp said that an independent winning in West Virginia hasn\u2019t happened in the past.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe scenario is that the strong independent gets as much as 20 percent or 25 percent two weeks before the election and then in the last fourteen days they just crash, because people say &#8212; do I really want the other person to win?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Don\u2019t overlook West Virginia&#8217;s Eastern Panhandle independents in the four way race for Congress between Democrat Nick Casey, Republican Alex Mooney, Libertarian Davy Jones and Independent Ed Rabel.
