Tractor Trailer Crash in Berkeley Springs Knocks Out Traffic Lights

A tractor trailer crashed yesterday at the intersection of US 522 and WV 9 in Berkeley Springs at the old Sheetz, knocking out traffic signals and closing 522 for an extended period of time.

The semi was heading southbound on 522 when it ran off the west shoulder of the highway, onto the sidewalk and destroyed the traffic signals.

Department of Highways placed temporary stop signs at the intersection to facilitate traffic flow.

Morgan County Sheriff K.C. Bohrer said preliminary indications are the semi driver fell asleep. The investigation is continuing into the crash.

Public officials met early this morning to discuss traffic issues, temporary remedies and contacting the Department of Highways to request additional traffic measures be put in place.

“The motoring public is asked to use extra caution and patience as we all work together to solve this issue,” Bohrer said.

Alternative routes are encouraged during high traffic times and especially this weekend with increased traffic due to regular weekend traffic and due to the upcoming Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester, Virginia.
